The next few decades will provide excellent opportunities for Air Traffic Control (ATC) system manufacturers and system suppliers to provide Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), airport and airline operation control centres with new technology focussed on increasing capacity and throughput while preserving safety. Industry needs combined with regulatory demands have driven a common design philosophy with standardized interface specifications, facilitated by development groups such as SESAR and NextGen.
However, integration of new technologies in legacy systems or combining with existing procedures will not come easily. Our thorough understanding of functional ATM requirements and how to effectively relay them to operational air traffic controllers will facilitate a more efficient integration.
